Model Mill

The Model Mill is a hybridization of an archived past and a budding future for the downtown area of Johnson City, Tennessee. It serves as a vibrant front door to the community and is one of the most recognizable buildings in the city. As a catalyst for the Walnut Street Corridor redevelopment, the Mill acts as a gateway project connecting downtown, East Tennessee State University, and the historic Tree Streets neighborhood.

Before its restoration, the Mill was completely abandoned, generating more problems than just aesthetics, including safety concerns for downtown and the adjacent residential neighborhood. The Mill has since returned to its former glory, boasting with historical artifacts and designs that magnify its heritage. In its prime the 100+ year old Model Mill building, former home to General Mills Company, was the picture of industrial innovation and grit. With the character of the original building still intact, modern conveniences were added to bring the services, utilities, technologies, and finishes up to present-day standards. The original building shell was mended, existing building materials were reused wherever possible, and brownfield materials were recycled in place.

Since its revival, the Mill is now home to some of the city’s most established businesses with roots that run deep. It was chosen as the home for Summers-Taylor, Inc. headquarters, Baker Donelson, Crumb Bakeshop, ETSU Alumni + Advancement Association, and the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce. The Model Mill has transformed into a dynamic community center, a warm welcome to the city, and a downtown landmark.
